‘After the Anarchy’ by Devika Pillay, Mixed Media, 1.5m x 1,2m. artwork was inspired by the artists experience during A deadly spree of violence and looting engulfing South African provinces of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) during which thousands of businesses were gutted and at least 330 people were killed. The KZN government declared a state of disaster to divert funds toward the recovery. The chaos and anarchy was driven by an unknown faction within the country using the ongoing crisis of poverty, inequality and unemployment to destabilise the government and spread fear amongst the communities. The use of graffiti represents the defiant atmosphere during the 2 weeks. The coming together of the communities of all races, to protect the infrastructure and rebuild, is represented by the hands. The numbered hands shows the death roll call during the anarchy. The stencilled alphabets represents the lack of education, as destroying infrastructure is not the solution to show grievance. Education is Key together with social cohesion.
